Take it to heart

Original devotional reflection; this is not a Scripture quotation.

A decision can seem urgent because we want relief from uncertainty. Before choosing, consider whose wellbeing is involved and what information is still missing. Prayer can help us become less defensive about the answer we prefer. Seek counsel from someone who can disagree with kindness. Wisdom makes room for consequences beyond the first moment and for a course correction when new facts come to light. Read today’s Scripture slowly, and bring this ordinary situation before God with an open heart.

Let us pray together

Original prayer

Lord, teach me to seek sound counsel and the facts needed for good decisions. Let your grace shape my choices today. Give me an honest heart, patient attention to others, and the humility to begin again when I fail. May my small actions serve love. Amen.

One small step today

Before one consequential decision, write the missing fact you need and ask a trustworthy person for perspective.

Night has fallen · the examen comes first

As the day comes to a close

Five moments to look back on your day with God.

  1. Before asking, give thanks. Before thinking, listen.
  2. Name three small goodnesses of the day — God speaks in small things.
  3. What gave you peace? What stole your peace? The Lord is in the first.
  4. Bring to the cross what weighs on you. He has already carried it.
  5. Receive the blessing of the night in His name.

✝ In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit Amen.
